What really sold me on Avocado was their commitment to sustainability. I’ve become more conscious of the environmental impact of my purchases, including in the bedroom.

I recently bought an Avocado Green Mattress, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The process started with me scouring online reviews, trying to find a mattress that would not only be comfortable but also durable and, most importantly, sustainable. Avocado kept coming up as the top choice, and now that I’ve spent some time with it, I can wholeheartedly see why.

First, let’s examine the different lines of mattresses they offer as it’s a bit confusing when picking through all the options. Avocado offers the Avocado Green Mattress, Avocado Eco Organic Mattress, Avocado Latex Mattress, Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress, and Avocado Vegan Mattress.

The differences in a nutshell:

Avocado Green Mattress: Best for those seeking a balanced combination of comfort, support, and price; made in a hybrid design with organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool, cotton and coils. Available with or without a pillow-top.

Avocado Eco Organic Mattress: The affordable eco-friendly line made of organic materials in a hybrid design, but with fewer coils and without the pillow-top option.

Avocado Latex Mattress: Ideal for those who prefer an all-latex, coil-free mattress with excellent bounce and support.

Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress: The brand’s top-end “luxury” hybrid mattress with more layers, coils, and an overall thicker structure requring deep-pocket sheets.

Avocado Vegan Mattress: Essentially, the Green Mattress without the wool for vegan consumers.

Based on my preference for a pillow top plus a price that landed between the Eco Organic and the Luxury line, I ordered the Avocado Green Mattress King with Pillow-Top. I didn’t want latex as it’s too heavy to move around and I’d had one before.

First off, and perhaps the most important factor (after sustainability), is comfort. The mattress is exceptionally cozy with just the right amount of sink versus support for a princess and the pea side-sleeper like myself. I’ve always struggled to find a mattress that feels just right—not too soft, not too firm. With Avocado, it feels like they’ve hit the sweet spot. The support it provides, especially around my lower back (which aches after a long day at a desk), has been a game-changer. Whether I’m on my back, side, or even stomach, I feel like I’m snuggled in a soft embrace.

Apparently, the materials they use play a role in this comfort. I’ve slept on my fair share of thin, crinkly, cheap mattresses around the world while traveling, and I can tell the difference. Avocado mattresses are made with natural latex, organic cotton, and wool, which not only feel good but give me peace of mind that I’m not breathing in fumes every night nor contributing further to the production of synthetic materials.

Many people in the reviews praised the breathability of the mattress, and I completely agree. I tend to sleep hot, but with the Avocado mattress, I’ve noticed that I stay cool throughout the night. (Also, I use this cooling comforter which I highly recommend. Read about my bedding recommendations here.) This is especially important to me as someone who lives in a warmer climate; no more tossing and turning, trying to find the cool side of the bed here in Charleston, SC.

Durability was another critical factor for me. Mattresses are a big investment, and I wanted something that would last. The reviews I read were full of people raving about how their Avocado mattress had held up over the years. Now that I’ve had mine for a while, I can see that this is going to be a mattress I’ll have for years, It’s solidly built, with attention to detail that’s evident in the tight stitching and firm construction. Even after several months of use, there’s no sagging or loss of support.

But what really sold me on Avocado was their commitment to sustainability. In fact, sustainability was the non-negotiable starting point of my research, not the “nice to have” if I like the mattress. Avocado is a Certified B Corporation, which means they meet rigorous standards for social and environmental performance.

Avocado organic mattresses are manufactured in California with 100% certified organic materials, sourced both domesticaly and internationally, including at their our own farms in India and Guatemala. The materials hit all the key certifications including GOLS certified organic latex, GOTS certified organic wool, GOTS certified organic cotton, and GOTS certified organic kapok fiber. The factory and wood shop in Los Angeles are both GOTS organic and FSC® certified — and powered entirely by renewable energy. Avocado also boasts to be the world’s only Climate Neutral Certified® mattress and bedding brand. Most of their products are Greenguard Gold and MADE SAFE® certified. They donate one percent of all revenues to environmental nonprofits through its membership with 1% For The Planet.

While this reads like a laundry list of certifcations and committments, the bottom line is their mattress is outstanding while ticking the ethical and environmental boxes Azure Road cares about.

The elephant in the room is that Avocado mattresses are not cheap. However, they often run specials around the holidays so if you keep an eye out, you can secure a serious discount. An Azure Road principle is to buy less but better (when we can), so I felt comfortable making this kind of investment in my bed. After all, I spend a lot of time there.
