“Sunny’s Spa has the same cheerful laid back atmosphere as Oceanside itself.”
The Azure Road Take
Sunny’s Spa & Beauty Lounge is more than you might expect from a hotel spa, offering a wide array of services with a down-to-earth and welcoming California casual chic vibe. Along with standard massages and facials, there are hair and nail services available at the salon, plus IV therapy and vitamin boost shots issued by nurse practitioners to ensure that guests are looking and feeling their best for any occasion. California skincare brands like OSEA Malibu and Knesko are used extensively, and every facial and body treatment can be personalized to suit guest desires.
Sustainability Chops
Under the leadership of spa director Marissa Edwards, the spa brings a thoughtful approach to wellness that champions women-driven businesses and projects, featuring female-owned businesses like Knesko and OSEA Malibu. Sustainable beauty brands like Comfort Zone, renowned for its commitment to regenerative agriculture and wellness-focused sustainability, take center stage and the spa’s salon uses exclusively Davines haircare products, a certified B Corp.
Reusable glassware is used rather than plastic for all beverage stations and even the disposable amenities like brushes, combs, and shower caps are made with biodegradable corn husk. Communal spaces are designed to be gender-neutral inclusive, offering a rejuvenating and relaxing experience for all guests regardless of gender, identity, ability, or orientation.
The Treatment
I tried the Body Surf Back Facial combined with a 30-minute back massage and my therapist Sarah works as both an esthetician and massage therapist. Back facials are not that common, but it’s such a pleasure to have tender care provided to a hard-to-reach part of your body that doesn’t get nearly as much love as your face but is often on full display at the beach. The back facial included all of the same steps as a facial including cleansing, exfoliating and a nourishing mask, resulting in a brighter and smoother complexion immediately. My therapist created a customized cocktail of Comfort Zone and OSEA products, including OSEA’s Salt of the Earth exfoliating scrub and white tea clay mask combined with Comfort Zone cleanser, toner and tranquil massage oil.
Spa Location
Sunny’s Spa has the same cheerful laid back atmosphere as Oceanside itself, an oceanfront sanctuary located in the The Seabird Resort, a beachfront hotel with sister property Mission Pacific Beach Resort next door. Sunny’s is on the second floor with spacious co-ed relaxation spaces including an aromatherapy sanarium, dry sauna, and lounge decorated in multitudinous shades of blue where you can sip tea while listening to crashing ocean waves. You’re within easy walking distance of downtown Oceanside and the spa offers local San Diego and Orange County residents weekday discounts.
Staff Vibe
The front desk staff are disarmingly friendly and efficient while knowledgeable therapists customize every treatment to best address your needs in the current moment, and sagely prescribe products based on your skincare concerns. For example, Sarah was more than happy to spot treat a couple blemishes on my face with blue light even though I had booked a back facial. Afterwards, I picked up a TheraFace PRO from the well curated retail space, recommended by my therapist to continue a deluxe skincare routine with 10-minute facials while I’m traveling.
Accessibility
Sunny’s Spa is fully ADA compliant and committed to inclusivity, offering accessible facilities and services to accommodate guests with disabilities, including accessible treatment rooms, public spaces and restrooms, to ensure a comfortable experience for all guests.
